How to filter tweets from your Twitter stream, using OutTwit

November 15th, 2008

In the previous post, we have seen one way to stay on the top of tweets from a specific set of people.
Let’s look at another way to achieve the same results, using Outlook’s Search Folders feature.

You can create a new “Search Folder” in Outlook and set it to display only tweets from particular senders, or only tweets that contain a particular word, or match any other criteria supported by Outlook filters.

Follow these steps:

1. Install OutTwit if you haven’t already. Complete the basic set up.
Open Outlook. Go to the mail box containing your tweets.

2. Go to “File->New->Search folder” in Outlook.
Outlook displays a “New Search Folder” window.

3. In that window, under “Select a Search Folder“, choose “Create a custom Search Folder”.

4. Next, click on the “Choose” button in that window.
Outlook opens a “Custom Search Folder” window.

5. Give a name to your Search folder. I am calling it “MyTwitterSearch“.

6. Click on the “Criteria” button to specify search terms.
In this example, i’d like to search for all the tweets that contain the words “mashable” or “Lifehacker” in them.

7. Click on OK and return to the “Custom Search Folder” window.

8. Click on “Browse” and select OutTwit’s Twitter folder. (This is the folder you’ve configured in OutTwit).

Click on OK.

9. Your search folder is ready! Go to Mailbox->SearchFolders->MyTweetsSearch.
You can now have a look at all tweets that contain the words “mashable” or “Lifehacker” in them.

This is just one example. You can play around with Outlook’s Search Folder options and tune it according to your needs.

Combine Outlook’s Search Folders functionality with OutTwit and boost up Twitter’s Signal-to-Noise ratio :)

For example: “from:Lifehacker OR from:mashable”

5. Click on “Select Folder” and assign an Outlook folder for your group. I’m calling it “MyGroup”.

6. Click on Save and return to the “Manage Searches” window, and hit “Close”

That’s it… MyGroup is ready.

Open My Group folder in Outlook and check out tweets from people in your group.

By creating your own Twitter Group in Outloook, you can filter out signal from noise. You no longer have to dig through a pile of tweets searching for tweets from your friends.

There are tons of other possibilities with OutTwit+Twitter Search integration.
Check out this page for supported search operators.

The beauty of OutTwit lies in its seamless integration with Outlook, which you probably have open all the time anyway. So, that’s one less application on your desktop.

How to Sync Google Calendar with iPhone via Outlook

October 23rd, 2008

If you are a windows user & have been trying to sync the calendar on your iPhone with your Google Calendar, try these steps:

  • Download Google Calendar Sync, offered by Google. It allows you to sync events between Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar. You’ll be able to determine the direction of information flow, as well as the sync frequency.
  • Sync your iPhone calendar events with your Outlook calendar.

That’s it!

Google Calendar Sync offers three types of Sync Options between Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar.

  • 2-way sync:
All events in your primary Google Calendar and your default Microsoft Outlook calendar are synced together.
  • 1-way: Google Calendar to Microsoft Outlook calendar
  • 1-way: Microsoft Outlook calendar to Google Calendar

Google Calendar Sync

Limitations
Google Calendar Sync will only sync events from your primary Google Calendar and your default Microsoft Outlook calendar at this time.

Other solutions

OggSync

OggSync is feature rich, for more advanced Google Cal users.
It supports Multiple Google Calendars and Multiple Outlook Calendars
Import Google Colors, Google Calendars mapped to Outlook Categories etc

However, OggSync is not free. I have not tried it yet (38MB installer? Huh!)

KallOut Wins BOSS Mashable Challenge

October 14th, 2008

KallOut Wins BOSS Mashable Challenge, Socialmention Wins Runner Up.

More here: http://mashable.com/2008/10/14/boss-mashable-challenge-winners/

KallOut is the first application to bring “selection-based search” to any web page, email, presentation, document, spreadsheet or PDF. Unlike other search methods that are trapped inside the browser, KallOut serves up content from the most popular sites on the web inside floating information palettes (which we call KallOuts). Using only your mouse, you can now avoid the disruption of launching a browser and let KallOut bring you the best the web has to offer.

Socialmention allows you to track conversations about you, your company, a new product, or any topic across the Web’s social media landscape.

KallOut is impressive. SocialMention’s Blog search is great.. while Microblogs search lags.

Export outlook data to mac, the easy way.

October 12th, 2008

MessageSave by TechHit
Exporting Outlook data from Windows to Mac (Apple Mail, Entourage) is quite a cumbersome task.
If you aren’t planning on using any additional software, you’ll have to go through Outlook express or Thunderbird. The steps are far from being easy, yet the results are quite error prone.

There are some shareware products available out there. I’ve taken them for a spin, and the best & easiest one seems to be MessageSave. It’s yet another highly useful product from the Productivity tools company – TechHit (the makers of Simplyfile).

The tool is quite intuitive. And it literally took me a couple of mouse clicks to
export my Messages, Contacts, Calanders.
(Open Outlook, goto Tools->MessageSave->Apple Mac Export ->Export Messages/Calendars/Contacts)

Then I transferred those exported files to my Mac, and imported them to AppleMail, Addressbook, Calander, Entourage etc.

That’s it…! Cowabunga!

Here’s more info on exporting messages, contacts, calendars.

Alladin’s – CategorieZ

June 1st, 2008

CategorieZ – A sidebar to Microsoft® Outlook® providing greater control over your categories!

Description:
Category manager for Outlook.

GTD Pitch:
* Lets you quickly assign Category/Categories to mails/calanders/tasks/notes/contacts/journals.

* One click command to Filter Outlook items (mails, contacts, notes etc) based on a given category.

It lets you assign and glance at your emails that fall into different category buckets with a “single click”

Download size
~6MB

Features
1. Keeps a window(pane) open, so that you can easily click on a category and apply it to selected mail(s), as opposed to accomplishing the same with Outlook’s multiple step commands.

2. Lets you assign HotKeys to categories. When you hit the HotKey, category associated with HotKey gets assigned to the email.

3. Lets you group categories.

4. Synchronize categories with a master list.

5. Backup category list and Restore.

Pros:
- “Filter” button… which lets you look at different email buckets in one click.

Cons:
It lacks intelligence. Would be nice if it can recommend categories based on my previous category assignments on a given kind of email.
